« Speaking @ Portland IDUG, visiting TypeCon Atlanta

Just a quick note here. As posted on the Extensis blog in more detail:

  1. I’m speaking this Thursday (July 9th) at the InDesign User Group right here in Portland, Oregon.
  2. I’ll be at the TypeCon conference in Atlanta late next week, and happy to meet people there and answer questions.

Cheers,

T

    hello thomas,
thank you for sharing your time and expertise regarding font useage/design at last nite’s portland idug. i love type, too, and hope to one day create at least one font, altho’ my college advisor recently assured me there is no money in it. how right is she?

    welcome2portland!

[Well, there are a number of people who make a living at it. But you’re more likely to make a living as an actor than as a type designer. Also, unless you are very special indeed, your first typeface will not be worth much, but will instead be a learning experience. If you do want to make money at it, you should expect to spend a lot of time honing your craft first. You could go yourself a copy of FontLab Studio and start making typefaces… but you’d better love it, because your chances of making good money at it aren’t great. – T]

    Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your speaking at Portland IDUG. Being a typographer who have not had a type-centered conversation or topic in over a year, hearing somebody share his knowledge is refreshing and insightful!

A couple of folks from Typophile and I are working on a podcast, and in light of the .webfont discussion in the W3 mailing list, Typecon and other venues, we’d love to get your perspectives on it.
