« Consultant and Expert Witness

Thomas Phinney’s expertise in what he calls “forensic typography” has led to him testifying as an expert witness in court on several occasions since 1999, being quoted in newspapers from the Washington Post to the Dallas Morning News, online by BBC and National Public Radio, and being consulted by organizations ranging from PBS (for History Detectives) to the US Treasury Department to local law enforcement organizations from coast to coast. Paying clients for his consulting services have included a California city and a “big three” US auto maker, as well as Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Google, and Oxford University Press. Phinney has spoken about his “font detective” work at conferences all over the world, from SXSW in Austin, to New York, Rome, and London. Phinney has an MS in printing from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and an MBA from UC Berkeley. He has presented over a hundred times at conferences and workshops, and has been on the board of the international typography association (ATypI) since 2004, currently serving as secretary.
